Dexamethasone (Decason®) is one of the synthetic analogues of cortisol. Its main clinical applications are as a steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, for the prevention and treatment of cerebral oedema, in shock and as an antiemetic agent in cancer therapy.

Indications:
Shock, bronchial asthma, status asthmaticus, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, severe allergies, skin diseases, hyperpyrexia, bacteraemia, toxaemia, other indications where glucocorticoid therapy is required.

Mode of Action:
The major pharmacological actions of dexamethasone can be divided into three groups:
a. General effects on metabolism, water and electrolite balance
b. Negative feedback effects on the hypothalamus and pituitary
c. Anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
