Indications:
Topiramate is used to treat epilepsy and as an anticonvulsant in children and adults. In children, it is also indicated for the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It is most frequently prescribed for the prevention of migraine as it decreases the frequency of attack. One common off-label use of Topiramate is in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Other uses includes treatment of obesity and antipsychotic-induced weight gain.

Mode of Action:
Exact pathway by which Topiramate exerts its anticonvulsant and migraine prophylaxis effects are still unknown. But, electrophysiological and biochemical evidence suggests that Topiramate blocks voltage-dependent sodium channels, increases the activity of the neurotransmitter Gamma Amino Butyrate at some subtypes of the GABA-A receptor, antagonizes the AMPA/kainate subtype of the glutamate receptor and inhibits the carbonic anhydrase enzyme.
